Rugby School Opens Its Hanoi Pre-Prep, Bringing British Boarding Tradition to Vietnam

Rugby School Hanoi opened its doors to its first students this month, establishing the ninth campus in Rugby School Global's international network and the first British-heritage boarding school brand to take root in Vietnam's capital. According to Rugby School, the September 2026 intake is a phased launch covering a pre-prep for children aged three to seven, with prep and senior provision to follow from September 2027.

The campus occupies a site within Ciputra, the large compound development near Hanoi's West Lake that has for decades served as the address of choice for diplomatic and corporate households and, increasingly, for affluent Vietnamese families who now make up the larger part of international school demand in the city.

A local partnership as foundation

The school was developed with Khai Sang Corporation, a Vietnamese education group led by Tuyen Nguyen with five schools already in operation across the country. The partnership follows a template Rugby School Global has applied consistently across its international network: the local partner holds the land and regulatory licence while Rugby School provides the brand, curriculum, and staffing standards.

Students will follow the British curriculum from Early Years through to IGCSE, transitioning to the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme in the upper school. The school describes its guiding ethos as "Whole Person, Whole Point," emphasising character development and leadership alongside academic performance.

Hanoi's market is maturing fast

Demand for internationally accredited schooling in Hanoi has grown sharply in recent years, driven by Vietnam's expanding professional class, sustained expatriate presence from manufacturing multinationals, and a diplomatic community concentrated in the city's west. The capital's international school market is smaller than Ho Chi Minh City's but is widely seen by operators as having more available headroom, with fewer established British-brand schools relative to the number of families seeking one.

Rugby School Hanoi is not the only British independent to have read Hanoi as an opportunity this year. Uppingham School opened its Uppingham Hung Yen campus outside the capital in August 2026. The concentration of English independent school names now arriving in Vietnam reflects both the country's growing wealth and a measurable shift in parent preference toward recognisable British-curriculum brands over more established pan-Asian international school operators.

Places for the founding pre-prep cohort remain open. Rugby School Hanoi expects to add year groups annually, building toward a full-school configuration by the end of the decade.
